We use products made from trees every day. For example, furniture, floors, playing musical instruments, airplane parts, boats, bridges, decks, athletic equipment and many more.
To avoid complete deforestation, in earlier 90s there was established the non-profit organization Forest Stewardship Council.
to avoid complete deforestation
The non-profit organization Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was established in early 90s. It supports the idea of developing standards for responsible forest management. The first certificate was issued in 1993. The first headquarters opened in 1994.
This certification gives the public reassurance that timber products originating from a forest. As well, managed in a responsible and sustainable way.
FSC forest management confirms that the forest is managed in a way that preserves biological diversity. Also, benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability.
Consumers who care about social and environmental issues expected to give preference to products carrying such a label. Only certified Forest enterprises and groups of forest management units permitted to use the FSC label on their products.
FSC-certified timber has long used at the Olympic Games. The athletes’ village at the Vancouver 2010 games had 733 cottages and 16 large residential building. All these properties were built using FSC materials. The award podium was also made of certified Cedar. The Games in London in 2012 used 100% of wood and paper that were either certified or recycled. The same, wood suppliers were selected according with FSC standards in Sochi in 2014.
In many parts of the world, especially in East Asia, reforestation is increasing forest land. The number of forests has increased in 22 countries from the 50 most forest – rich countries in the world. Based on these trends, one research project claims that by 2050 the global number of forests on the planet will increase by 10%.
In 1980 in China, the government passed a law to protect forests and increase green territory. According to this law every employable citizen aged 11 to 60 years required to plant 3 to 5 trees a year, or to do equivalent work in other forest services. Almost 1 billion tree was planned annually since the time the this law was implemented. As today no longer required to plant so many trees. In 2019 the forest area in China reached 21.7 %, whereas in 1981 it was only 12%. Yet, every year on March 12th China celebrates a “Forest Planting Festival”.
Another example, on the island of Java in Indonesia in 2009, each couple of newlyweds must plant 10 trees. Unlike if were applying for divorce. In this case each couple must plant 50 trees. This is the method to fight deforestation of the island.
Because of forests provide the air we breathe, clean water to drink and resources we need to live, it’s important to do what we can to preserve this vital legacy today.
By promoting forest-friendly wood and paper products, the Forest Stewardship Council helps ensure healthy forests will thrive in the long run. By buying Forest Stewardship Council certified products, we can all do our part to protect the world’s forests.
